Where to stay in
County Sligo

County Sligo is a place of great diversity. On the one hand you have the wild and free Atlantic Ocean, and on the other quiet rivers and peaceful lakes. You have mountains and rugged hillsides, and a patchwork of soft pasture - and everything in between.

Sligo’s accommodation is just as diverse. For those working on a tight budget, there are campsites and hostels to be found, and also caravan parks. Many of these are in seaside locations and enquiries in any local area will point you in the right direction. This is a friendly county, with a great reputation for hospitality and many farmers still allow young visitors to pitch a tent in a field, but of course it is essential to ask permission first. For longer stays there is inexpensive self-catering accommodation, some in Sligo Town with all its amenities and attractions, others in the wilds of nowhere where you can really get away from it all and switch off for awhile. Self catering covers everything from apartments and houses to cottages, some brand new, others of great age and charm.

Bed and Breakfast continues to be one of the most popular ways of seeing the country - ideal for wandering at will, and easy to do without pre-planning. However, if you know where you want to stay, it’s always a good idea to book in advance, especially in summer. B&Bs come in all shapes and sizes from modern, purpose-built houses to Victorian, Georgian and even older establishments. In Sligo you can B&B in a castle or a cottage, you can stay with families who have owned their properties for generation upon generation, or with people who came to Sligo

from all over the world, fell in love with the county and stayed! For many, the nicest thing about staying in B&Bs is the eccentricities of the houses and often the owners too! This is one of the best ways of getting to know the country and making the most of your visit. Often you make friends and contacts and find yourself coming back again and again!

Guest houses and hotels are also available all over Sligo, and again these range in price and type to cater for all budgets and preferences. Hotels date back to the days of the stage coach and the start of regular public travel when posting houses were needed to provide accommodation not just for the travellers, but for the coach horses themselves, organising the relay system of fresh horses that kept the mail and stage coaches on the road. Some of the hotels in Sligo originate from that time, and many small, family run establishments are still to be found up and down the county, complimenting the bigger hotels, many of which are brand new and have only just opened their doors. Several major, internationally recognised groups have put massive investment into the county and their four star establishments offer the same quality and standards that are known in cities all over the world. Many hotels have excellent restaurants and other facilities, including spas and gyms.

There has never been more choice – stay in a cottage or a castle, a guest house or a 4 star hotel. Discover Sligo covers a wide selection to help you find the place that’s just right for you, so wherever you choose to stay, have a wonderful time enjoying all that County Sligo has to offer!
